Interlude

The heroines of history who need to go in disguise so they can accomplish some noble or dangerous task—or just stay alive—almost always costume themselves as men. This is a trope as hoary as the idea of country purity. A story is just more fun if the hero is really the heroine in disguise.

But this is one part of fiction that devolves from real life. For, in truth, a woman who seems to be a man is much safer than she is as a women. So long as she takes care not to act in a fashion that offers challenge to other men, a woman dressed as a man—even a very beautiful woman dressed as a man—can fade into the background.

A woman on the run who only disguises herself as a different woman—who simply dyes her hair, changes her clothes, adopts a new accent—gets only the benefit of anonymity. Others may not know who she is, but she remains a woman, vulnerable on those grounds alone, even if she can fight to protect herself.

It does not work in reverse. Men only disguise themselves as women for laughs. Appearing female does not make them safer.

Appearing female never makes anyone safer.
